Click the blue Load Data button on the top left and select the folder containing your Timeline data.

                
    
                    
  • For On-Device exported data: Choose the folder containing your Timeline.json file.
    
                        Note: If your system language isn't English, Google may have named this file differently. Please rename it to Timeline.json.

  • For Google Takeout data: Navigate to Takeout\Location History (Timeline)\Semantic Location History. Select this main parent folder (do not navigate into the individual yearly subfolders).

πŸ’Ύ The Place Cache

            

                
To display accurate names, categories, and icons, the app fetches details directly from the Google Maps API. To save your API quota and drastically speed up loading next time, you must save the Place Cache!

                
    
                    
  • Whenever new places are fetched from Google, a Save button will light up in the bottom left corner under "Place cache".

  • Clicking this button downloads a file named TimelinePlaceCache.json.
    • 
                    
  • Important: You must place this downloaded file and save it to the same folder as your Timeline data (overwriting any previous version).
    
                        (Tip: If your browser automatically saves files without asking you for a destination, you will need to manually move the file into your data folder.)

πŸ’‘ Pro Tips

            
    
                
  • Smart Date Navigation: Hold down the Ctrl key while clicking the < or > buttons (or using Ctrl + Left/Right Arrow keys) to stretch your date range. This modifies only the Start Date or End Date individually, rather than shifting the entire viewing window.

  • Traveling Across Timezones? If you are looking at a past trip, go to Settings and change the "Display times in" dropdown to the local timezone of your destination. This forces the timeline to align perfectly with the local days as you experienced them, ignoring your computer's current clock.

  • Local Edits: Any edits or additions you make to your timeline are saved to a TimelineEdits.json file. Just like the cache, make sure this file lives inside your data folder so the app applies your corrections automatically on the next load.

  • Using This on Your Phone: Running a local HTML file directly on an Android or iOS device can be difficult. If you want to use this on your phone, you can use the hosted version and select your local data folder from there. Because the app runs locally, even when it's hosted remotely, your private location data never leaves your device!

  • Generate Visits from Photos: You can use GPS-tagged photos to fill in missing timeline gaps. Go to Settings and use the "Import Photo GPS Data" tool. Note, however, that the results may be a little messy, as Google will assign the nearest places based on the GPS coordinates, and there won't be any activity tracks (eg Walking) between photos.

  • Custom Home & Work Locations: If you're seeing your home street address instead of the "Home" title and icon, you can set the correct specific Place ID(s) in the Advanced Settings section.
